The Two Pots - A clay pot and a brass pot floating side by side down a river after a flood

The Story

Once upon a time, a mighty river burst its banks, sending a rushing torrent of water across the countryside. Among the debris caught in the swirling currents were two pots: one made of sturdy brass, and the other made of fragile clay. As they were carried along by the chaotic waves, they bumped against each other repeatedly.

The brass pot, feeling quite protective and aware of his companion's vulnerability, tried his best to keep a safe distance. "Stay back, dear friend," the brass pot called out above the roar of the water. "The currents are fierce, and if we strike one another, you are certain to shatter into a thousand pieces. Let us stay apart so that you might survive this storm."

However, the clay pot, perhaps fueled by a foolish pride or a desperate lack of understanding of his own nature, did not heed the warning. He ignored the brass pot’s advice, believing that he was just as capable of weathering the storm as his metallic companion. He drifted closer, thinking that their combined weight might help them navigate the rocks more easily.

Suddenly, a massive surge of water slammed them together. The collision was inevitable and swift. The brass pot, solid and unyielding, remained perfectly intact, bearing only a few minor scratches from the ordeal. The clay pot, however, was not so fortunate. At the very first touch, he cracked, and within moments, he had crumbled into fine dust and shards, disappearing beneath the churning river forever.

It was a tragic end for the clay pot, whose lack of self-awareness led to his demise. He had failed to realize that while they might both be pots, they were fashioned from entirely different materials, each with its own limitations. Had he listened to the wisdom of his companion, he might have drifted peacefully to the riverbank and lived to see another day. Instead, by trying to be what he was not, he vanished in an instant.
