The Frogs Desiring a King - A noisy crowd of frogs looking up and asking Jupiter for a king in a marsh

The Story

In a peaceful, sprawling pond, a colony of frogs lived a life of simple, chaotic freedom. They spent their days croaking, splashing, and catching flies, answering to no one. However, as time passed, a sense of restlessness grew among them. They began to grumble, claiming their society lacked order and dignity. "We need a king!" they cried out. "A mighty monarch to rule over us and bring structure to our lives!"

They sent a plea to Jupiter, the king of the gods, begging for a ruler. Jupiter, amused by their foolishness, cast a large, heavy log into the center of the pond. With a mighty splash, the log landed, sending ripples across the water and causing the frogs to dive for cover in terror. For a long time, the frogs hid in the mud, trembling at the presence of the silent, imposing giant. Eventually, one brave frog peeked out, then another. They realized the log did not move or speak. Emboldened, they began to climb upon it, mocking the inanimate object. "Is this our king?" they laughed. "A silent, useless piece of wood!"

Dissatisfied once more, the frogs petitioned Jupiter again. "Give us a king who truly rules!" they demanded. This time, Jupiter grew impatient with their vanity. He sent a hungry stork down to the pond. The bird wasted no time, wading gracefully through the shallow waters and snapping up the frogs one by one. With every strike of its long, sharp beak, the population of the pond dwindled.

Panic spread through the water. The frogs realized too late that they had traded their safety for a tyrant. They cried out once more to the heavens, begging Jupiter to take the stork away. But Jupiter merely looked down from his throne and whispered, "You asked for a king, and you received one. Now, you must live with the consequences of your own discontent."

Moral of the Story

Be careful what you wish for, as the change you seek may bring more trouble than the peace you currently enjoy.
