The Story
In a lush green meadow, a noble horse grazed peacefully. He was the undisputed master of the fields until a stag, swift and arrogant, began to frequent the area. The stag was mischievous, trampling the grass and muddying the horse’s favorite watering hole. Frustrated and unable to catch the nimble creature, the horse grew bitter and plotted his revenge.
One afternoon, the horse spotted a hunter resting by the edge of the woods, his bow leaning against a tree. An idea struck the horse. He approached the man and offered a proposal. 'I know where the stag hides,' the horse said, nudging his head toward the deep forest. 'If you will climb upon my back, I will carry you to him, and you can strike him down with your arrows.'
The hunter, eager for the prize, agreed instantly. He leapt onto the horse’s back, and together they galloped into the thicket. Soon, they tracked the stag and brought him down. The horse felt a surge of triumph, watching his rival fall. 'Now,' the horse neighed, 'please dismount so that I may return to my quiet meadow.'
But the hunter did not slide down. Instead, he tightened the reins and patted the horse’s neck with a cold, firm hand. 'I have no intention of letting you go,' the hunter replied. 'You are strong, fast, and now broken to the bit. You shall serve me, and I shall keep you in my stable from this day forward.'
The horse’s heart sank as he realized his mistake. By seeking to destroy his enemy, he had willingly surrendered his independence. He stood trapped, his freedom traded for a moment of petty spite. As the hunter led him away toward the village, the horse finally understood that the price of vengeance was far greater than the annoyance he had suffered.
Moral of the Story
“He who seeks revenge for a small injury often pays a much higher price with his own freedom.”
