The Boy Who Cried Wolf

High upon a sun-drenched hillside, a young shepherd boy tended to his master’s flock of sheep. Day after day, the task was monotonous, and the silence of the hills often felt heavy. To amuse himself and stir some excitement into the quiet afternoon, the boy decided to play a trick on the nearby villagers. He cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!"

Hearing his frantic cries, the villagers dropped their tools and rushed up the hill, breathless and ready to defend the flock. When they arrived, however, they found only the boy laughing hysterically. There was no wolf, and the sheep were grazing peacefully. The villagers, annoyed by the prank, returned to their work, warning the boy not to cry wolf without cause.

A few days later, the boy grew bored again and repeated his deceit. "Wolf! Wolf!" he screamed. Once more, the villagers hurried to help, only to be met with the boy’s mocking laughter. This time, the villagers were truly angry, feeling their kindness had been foolishly exploited. They left the boy alone, resolved not to be fooled a third time.

Not long after, a real wolf emerged from the dark shadows of the forest. It crept toward the flock with hungry eyes and sharp fangs. Terrified, the boy ran toward the village, screaming with genuine fear, "Wolf! Please, help me! There is a wolf attacking the sheep!" But the villagers, remembering the previous lies, simply shook their heads. They believed it was just another one of his cruel pranks and remained in the village, refusing to move.

By the time the boy reached the meadow, the wolf had scattered the flock and made off with his prize. The boy sat amidst the scattered remains of his duty, weeping bitterly. He had learned a hard lesson that day: his words, once golden, had become worthless. Trust is a fragile bond, and once broken by deception, it is nearly impossible to repair.
