The Jackdaw and the Doves - A hungry jackdaw painting its feathers white to sneak into a dovecote full of grain

The Story

A jackdaw lived a simple life, but his heart was restless. He observed a nearby dovecote where the owner kept doves, providing them with plenty of food and shelter. The jackdaw grew envious, believing that if he could only look like a dove, he would share in their easy life and abundance.

Driven by this greedy ambition, the jackdaw decided to disguise himself. He coated his dark feathers with a thick layer of white chalk and slipped quietly into the dovecote. He perched among the doves, tucking his wings and mimicking their soft cooing. For a time, his plan worked perfectly. The owner, seeing only a flock of white birds, did not notice the intruder, and the jackdaw feasted happily on the grain provided for the doves.

However, the jackdaw’s true nature could not stay hidden forever. One day, he became so excited by the sight of fresh feed that he let out a loud, harsh 'Caw!' instead of the gentle coo of a dove. The sound echoed through the dovecote, shattering the illusion. The doves, realizing he was an impostor, attacked him with their beaks and drove him out into the cold.

Disappointed and bruised, the jackdaw returned to his own kind. But when he approached his fellow jackdaws, they did not recognize him. The white dust on his wings made him look like a stranger, and they pecked at him, refusing to let him join their flock. Hungry, lonely, and cast out by both groups, the jackdaw realized too late that by trying to gain what did not belong to him, he had forfeited the home he once possessed.

Moral of the Story

He who is not content with what he has, often loses everything by reaching for what is not his.
