The Donkey and the Load of Sponges - The same donkey proudly carrying bundles of dry sponges toward a stream crossing

The Story

A donkey, weary from his daily labor, was tasked by his master to transport a heavy load of sponges from the seaside to the village market. The journey was long and the path wound precariously along the edge of a rushing river. As the donkey trudged along, he felt the weight pressing heavily upon his tired back, and he grew resentful of his master’s demands.

As they reached a shallow part of the river, the donkey stumbled. He fell forward, and the sponges he carried became completely submerged in the water. To his surprise, when he stood up, the load felt significantly lighter. The sponges had soaked up the water, but in his ignorance, the donkey believed that the river had magically spirited away the weight. He felt clever and thought he had discovered a secret trick to make his future journeys effortless.

Eager to test his new discovery, the donkey deliberately stepped into the river the very next day while carrying another load of sponges. He intentionally knelt down, letting the water soak into the material. However, he had failed to account for the simple physics of his burden. The sponges were not merely wet; they were now saturated with the heavy river water, making them weigh several times more than they had when they were dry.

When the donkey tried to rise, he found himself pinned to the muddy riverbank by the immense weight of the sodden sponges. He struggled in vain, his legs shaking under the crushing mass. His master, witnessing the donkey’s foolish attempt to shirk his duty, sighed as he waded into the water to help the beast. The donkey learned a painful lesson that day: his attempt to outsmart his master and take a shortcut had resulted in a burden far greater than the one he had tried so desperately to avoid.

Moral of the Story

Do not seek to evade your duties through deception, for the consequences may be far heavier than the original burden.
