The Story
Patty the milkmaid was walking toward the market with a pail of fresh milk balanced perfectly upon her head. As she walked, her mind began to wander, and she started to weave a grand tapestry of future wealth. She thought to herself, 'With this milk, I shall make enough cream to sell at a high price. With the coins I earn, I will buy a dozen eggs. Those eggs will hatch into fine chickens, and before long, I will have a thriving poultry farm.'
Her imagination grew even bolder as she quickened her pace. 'I will sell the chickens and buy a beautiful silk dress to wear to the village fair. I can see it now—the young men will all gaze at me with envy and admiration, and I shall walk past them with my head held high, ignoring their pleas for my attention.'
Carried away by this delightful vision, Patty tossed her head back in a haughty gesture of dismissal. At that very moment, the pail, deprived of its balance, slid from her head and tumbled to the ground. The milk splashed across the dusty path, turning the dry earth into a puddle of white waste. Her dreams of silk dresses and bustling farms vanished in an instant, leaving her with nothing but an empty bucket and a heavy heart.
She stood still, staring at the white stream disappearing into the dirt. The reality of her situation settled in; she had lost her product, her potential profit, and her pride all in one careless movement. She had been so busy building castles in the air that she had forgotten the simple task of carrying her pail safely to the market. With a deep sigh, she picked up her empty pail and began the long walk home, having learned that a future built on daydreams is as fragile as a puddle of spilled milk.
Moral of the Story
“Do not count your chickens before they are hatched.”
