The Story
Once upon a time, in a lush green meadow, lived a Hare who was deeply dissatisfied with his appearance. While he was fleet of foot and possessed a coat of soft, dappled fur, he spent his days lamenting the size of his ears. They were long, upright, and twitchy, catching every rustle of the wind.
'Why must I be saddled with these oversized flaps?' he grumbled to the other animals. 'They make me look foolish, and they are constantly in the way when I try to hide in the brambles. I wish I had small, neat ears like the fox, or perhaps no ears at all like the snakes.' The other animals simply shook their heads, for they knew that nature rarely makes a mistake.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, a sudden stillness fell upon the meadow. The Hare was busy nibbling on clover when his oversized ears swiveled sharply. He heard a sound that no other creature had detected: the faint, rhythmic rustling of dry leaves, followed by the soft pad-pad of a hunting lynx creeping through the brush. Because his ears were large and sensitive, he caught the warning long before the danger arrived.
With a powerful leap, the Hare darted into his burrow, safe and sound, just moments before the predator reached the spot where he had been standing. Safe inside the dark, cool earth, the Hare let out a long breath. He realized that the very features he had despised were the ones that had granted him his life. He stopped complaining about his long ears and instead gave thanks for the keen hearing that allowed him to outwit his enemies. He learned that beauty is not always found in symmetry or smallness, but in the utility and survival that nature provides.
Moral of the Story
“Be content with what you have, for every gift serves a purpose beyond its appearance.”
