The Farmer and His Sons - An elderly farmer pointing toward his vineyard while his sons gather beside his bed

The Story

An old farmer, who had worked his land with honest sweat for many years, felt his strength waning as age caught up with him. He had several sons who, though strong and capable, were idle and preferred to spend their days in pursuit of fleeting pleasures rather than tending to the fields that had sustained their family for generations.

As the farmer lay on his deathbed, he summoned his sons to his side. He knew that if he left them his fortune, they would likely squander it away in their laziness. He spoke to them with a raspy but firm voice, saying, 'My sons, my time on this earth is drawing to a close. Before I go, I must tell you that there is a great treasure buried deep within our vineyard. Search for it, and you shall find enough wealth to live in comfort for the rest of your lives.'

The sons were overcome with curiosity and excitement. No sooner had their father passed away than they rushed to the vineyard with shovels and pickaxes in hand. They turned the soil over, digging deep and working tirelessly under the hot sun. They dug up every inch of the land, from the northern boundary to the southern fence, turning the earth completely over in their desperate search for the hidden gold.

However, after weeks of diligent labor, they found no chest of coins, no jewels, and no hidden inheritance. Frustrated and exhausted, they prepared to give up. Yet, as the seasons turned, a marvelous thing happened. Because the soil had been so thoroughly loosened and aerated, the vines grew stronger and healthier than they had ever been before. That year, the harvest was the most bountiful the village had ever seen. The grapes were plump, sweet, and abundant, and when the sons sold their crop at the market, they earned a fortune far exceeding their expectations.

Only then did the sons understand the wisdom of their father’s final words. They realized that the treasure was not hidden in the dirt, but in the labor itself. Through the work they had done, they had transformed the barren land into a source of lasting prosperity. They continued to farm the land with the same vigor, learning that the true secret to a wealthy life is found in the sweat of one's brow.

Moral of the Story

Industry is itself a treasure.
