The Story
Once upon a time, there was a dog named Barnaby who considered himself the luckiest creature in the countryside. One sunny afternoon, his fortunes seemed to improve even further when he happened upon a large, succulent piece of meat at the local butcher shop. With a joyful bark and a wagging tail, he seized the prize firmly in his jaws, determined to find a quiet, secluded spot to enjoy his feast away from the prying eyes of other hungry dogs.
As he trotted along, Barnaby came to a narrow wooden bridge that spanned a clear, still stream. The water was as smooth as a polished mirror, reflecting the blue sky and the fluffy clouds above. While crossing, he paused to look down, and there, deep beneath the surface of the water, he saw another dog carrying a piece of meat that appeared to be even larger and more delicious than his own.
Greed, cold and sudden, took hold of his heart. Barnaby did not stop to consider that the creature in the water was merely a reflection. He only saw the opportunity to double his meal. Driven by a foolish hunger, he let out a fierce growl, preparing to dive into the water to snatch the prize from the stranger below. He opened his mouth wide to snap at the reflection, but as he did, his own piece of meat slipped from his jaws.
It fell with a soft splash, disappearing into the depths of the stream, carried away by the gentle current. The reflection vanished instantly, leaving the water rippling and empty. Barnaby stood on the bridge, staring down at the spot where his dinner had vanished. The reality of his situation dawned upon him; he had lost his perfectly good meal because he was unsatisfied with what he already possessed. Hungry and crestfallen, he turned away from the stream, having learned a hard lesson about the dangers of unchecked desire.
Moral of the Story
“Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.”
