The Ant and the Dove - A tiny ant falling into a stream while a dove on a branch drops a leaf to save it

The Story

On a sweltering summer afternoon, a thirsty little ant wandered down to the edge of a sparkling stream to find a drink. As he leaned over the water, he lost his footing and tumbled into the rushing current. The tiny creature struggled in vain against the swirling eddies, gasping for breath as the cold water threatened to pull him under.

High above, perched upon the branch of a leafy tree, a gentle dove witnessed the ant’s desperate plight. With a flutter of wings, she felt a surge of compassion for the small, drowning insect. She quickly plucked a broad, green leaf and dropped it delicately into the water near the struggling ant. The ant scrambled onto the floating raft, and the current carried him safely to the muddy bank. He shook his weary legs, feeling immense gratitude toward his feathered savior.

Not long after, the peace of the forest was broken by the arrival of a cruel fowler. The man crept silently through the undergrowth, his eyes fixed on the dove as she rested blissfully in the canopy above. He raised his heavy net, preparing to ensnare the unsuspecting bird. The ant, who had been searching for food nearby, watched the scene unfold with horror. He knew he had to act quickly to repay the debt of his own life.

Just as the hunter prepared to cast his net, the ant scurried up the man’s foot and delivered a sharp, stinging bite to his ankle. The fowler cried out in sudden, intense pain, dropping his net and stumbling backward. The sudden commotion startled the dove, who immediately took flight and soared high into the safety of the open sky. From the safety of the clouds, the dove looked down and let out a soft coo, recognizing her small friend who had saved her in return. The ant returned to his colony, knowing that a kindness once given had come full circle, proving that even the smallest of creatures can be a powerful guardian.

Moral of the Story

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
